Montgomery County issued a severe thunderstorm alert. Not that saying that means much; they seem to do this a few times a week. My company does VoIP, so that means we’re hooked up to the 911 alert system, which means I get paged for stuff like Amber Alerts, “suspect with gun fleeing north,” and a plethora of weather alerts among other things.

But those clouds over Silver Spring today are pretty ominous.

Something wicked this way comes... :)

It's quite the item of discussion over here at the National Weather Service.

You guys were seeing the edge of what hit us full-bore in Altoona, PA around 5pm tonight. Holy. Crapping. Crap. The storm system that was setting off tornado warnings in Pittsburgh finally lumbered over to my neck of the woods, and let's just say that you are in for a wild ride when the lightning isn't the most impressive part of the storm. Rain so thick and intense that it causes a near-whiteout (I couldn't see across the parking lot where I was sitting) and made the pavement look like it was boiling, and winds that made the Subaru Forrester shake! SHAKE!!!

It started with the dark ominous clouds, but as the storm got more intense, the clouds got lighter; it was the weirdest thing. Maybe the sheer volume of the water coming down was thinning the cloud cover or something? It was beyond raining cats and dogs, this was livestock-sized rain. The weird part about sitting in a parked car in a deluge was that you have a front row seat for all the action, but are perfectly dry, climate-controlled environment.

Well, I definitely got more than my recommended daily allowance of The Sublime, that's for sure...
