I am bored, and will be babysitting most of today. I want to ask those of my readers who have tattos:
- What do you have? - What is it ever mistaken for?
Mine is a Vegvisir compass. It's a runic compass that if the Vikings had bad weather or fog, they used to draw it on their foreheads with a piece of coal. I did it in Bjork's syle, because it looked nicer than others I saw. I got it to help me find my Swedish heritage, and boy, did it ever work.
But twice now, it was mistaken for "a white supremacy symbol," which is something I did not forsee. Nor can I find anything the white supremacists use that looks even close. |

simple - the dilemma is that anything someone doesn't recognize right off, on the arm of the pasty white dude is going to be hit with that label. Move to NOLA and they will guess voodoo. anyway - I have a Luna Moth on my back, between my shoulder blades - approximately 'life-sized' for the gigantic moth - two of the 'eyes' on the wings however have been replaced with pentacles. on my right hip I have the word 'push' - as I am part of the story "Skin" written by Shelley Jackson http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/living/2001946378_tattoobook06.html
No tattoos myself, but to add to aynne_witch's comment, it seems anything Norse/Germanic/Runic is considered white supremacist by some; there's a quick disclaimer at the top of the Southern Poverty Law Center's skin symbol page, for instance, that might not stick in one's mind as well as the rune tattoos that are present. (No actual Vegvisir, though people might have met skinheads with the tattoo present; that's how one person who asked after my hammer knew of the symbol.)
At least it is not on your forehead - then there'd be a lot more of that white supremacist error, I susupect. I have a stylized (a la a clock face) sun burst, but added to it are sort of mayan style tears, so a weeping sunburst. It is never mistook for much else, though people often ask what it means. I designed it with Jeff SMith at the end of college on a big road trip.
No tattoos, but with all this fur I could have a full body piece and no one would notice.
Both my dogs have tattoos, that didn't stop them.
hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
I have a Siamese cat flanked by my astrological symbol & the one shared by my husband & oldest son. (I'm planning to get #2 son's symbol added this summer) It's never been mistaken for anything else.
Of my 14 tattoos, the only one to be sadly mistaken by someone was my hawk tattoo. This guy was trying to flirt with me, rather badly, and asked at one point if it was a parakeet. I corrected him.
I have : a symbol for balance, an ankh with "tiger" in a cartouche, a chaos symbol, an egyptian nefer symbol (good luck), a symbol for love, a celtic tree of life, the moon phases with a pent for the full moon, a stylized hawk, the crow art from the first movie, the kanji for tiger, a celtic horse, a vine of ivy with a dragonfly, a vine of flowers, and one celtic knotwork ring around my ring finger.
Planned for the future : Pawprints that memorialize all the animals that have touched my life, another kanji, and possibly some wings on my back. I also plan to alter my ring tattoo at some point. | |
