My AMA Speech Notes [Aug. 18th, 2009|09:57 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

So while going through my iPhone notes, I found my notes for AMA. I figured I should annotate them because I am funny and you may all bow to my silly glory. These were notes I took during the rehearsal and run through. Most I used on stage. Some I did not, so consider this "deleted scenes" in the DVD commentary.

Warning: I am not as funny as I think I am, according to various grade school hall monitors )

Otakon - Lame review [Jul. 28th, 2009|08:02 am]
[Tags|, , ]

... literally.

I didn't do a review on Otakon, I realize that, but there wasn't a whole lot to say that I haven't said before. There were some highlights worth mentioning, though:

I am going to try and take both Chance and CR to Sweden in 2010. Not sure how, but I have to state it and start a goal. This has led to me planning financially as well as logistically. Part of the process was finding out how we do as a group in stressful situations. I think we did fairly well, and I learned a lot. First, both CR and Chance were amazing in what crap they put up with. Seriously. Both of them passed the attitude test. They were in cramped conditions, with long travel, and dealing with me and my foot. Not only that, but they worked their ASS off handing out Katsucon flyers for our table. A+ for the both of them.

Stuff I learned was about how to deal with a possible minor medical emergency, as I tore a ligament in my foot at Otakon. No idea how. It started to bother me on Friday, got much worse on Saturday, and by Sunday I could barely walk. EMTs at Otakon said "yeah, torn ligament." Juliet wrapped up my foot, gave me painkillers, told me to go see a doctor. Now I am in a boot. I still have no idea how I got hurt. I have no memories of tripping, twisting, falling, etc... no idea. Just sort of happened slowly on its own.

I also learned that I should have planned food and meals better. Much of what I knew about downtown Baltimore was woefully out of date, especially when it came to cheap eats. All the cheap places were either gone, closed early, or ran out of food if they didn't close early. Next time, I am planning to have some compact food ready for those times we're unable to get to food: Granola bars, jerky, whatever packs small, tastes good, and gives sustenance. When we travel, I will plan out blocks of the day to go food foraging.

As for Otakon itself... the con wasn't bad. Crowded as all hell, but as well run as I could have hoped for from my POV. I didn't get to see much of the con, as I was either not at the con, or if I was, I was working the Katsucon table.

The Katsucon table was the most awesome I had ever been to. We had 9 video screens, a deejay audio system, and giveaways from TenBu Productions, where we all announced we're getting the famous J-pop band, "Unicorn Table" and the famous Maid/Cosplayer/Model, Yunmao Ayakawa (whom I had mentioned I met earlier at AMA). Our table wasn't a "promotion" table, we were a solid production. Jim, [info]kaiotte, Mike C, and I were deejays making silly jokes and broadcasting throughout the Otakon dealer's room.

The Otakon dealer's room is so huge, and so many of the vendors sell the same crap, if I had a suggestions, it would be to have landmarks easily visible up in the air. One year I recall they had a Pioneer booth, and you could see their tall Escaflowne banners from a distance. You could tell people, "I am near the Pioneer display" and have a meetup place. But it would be nice if they had some kind of cheesy tall set of things they could scatter around the room, like Disneyland does their parking lots. "My booth is across from the Totoro with the fishing pole," or "I am two tables down from Hazuki in thigh-highs." or even just a colored banner. Even GenCon and Comic-Con have banners with numbers of the rows on them.

So there you have it.

My AMA 2009 Review [Jun. 23rd, 2009|07:39 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

So... here's my review.

Ed Fornter (AMA chair and former long time Katsucon staff/volunteer) approached me at Katsucon a few months ago and said he heard Rob Lantz would be stepping down as emcee, and would I pweeease take his place? I said, "Sure." There was a little confusion whether he was actually stepping down or not, and I was led to believe he was not even in town, but later I found out he was just a little burned out by the same shtick year after year and wanted a break. I can relate; I have left previously fun and good jobs because of that. He was even in the audience when I did my joke about him, which was, "What happened to Rob, and boy, did he let himself go! One haircut and he turned into a fat Swede..."

I have to be honest, I had never done the official emcee for a cosplay masquerade before. I mean, I had stepped in as a helper, worked backstage with someone doing cosplay, hosted Opening Ceremonies at Katsucon, was a technical cosplay judge once, did cosplay halftime at Katsucon with "Whose Katsu is it Anyway?" and done costume calls, masquerades, and costume balls at MANY sci-fi cons (FanTek cons the longest running), but this was my first "in front of thousands" Cosplay I had ever done. I considered this my first "official anime con cosplay emcee" job. I felt I could do this with no sweat.

I consider myself both blessed and puzzled why I never get stage fright )

Katsucon highlights [Feb. 16th, 2009|04:35 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

I wont go into some play-by-play of this con, but I had FAR more fun at this con than I have had in any weekend in a very long time. Some stuff happened to me I can't go into detail on (yet), but it was like the Good Luck Fairy visited me pretty much every damn day. Here are some highlights:

Yeah, I didn't do Opening Ceremonies. I wasn't even invited. :( I visited the first hour of them, and I kind of liked what they did. Nick was very comfortable with the audience, there was a MUCH tighter media display with slides and stuff than I ever did. I can't really complain, although I had to leave early right when the game show started because I had to take an important phone call. I got a chuckle out of the goon with the megaphone telling people to come up front and cram in. You do that with a full house, dude, OC never pulls more than 200 people. Everyone in that audience would have laid down across several chairs, and there still would have been enough seating space. Luckily he caught on quick and stopped yelling at us. I liked the Indiana Jones opener a LOT. I always wanted to do a skit, but never got it together enough. So in the end, I feel I passed on the torch to people who did better than I did, and that's all I could ask for. I was VERY sad, I have to admit, being just an audience member, but felt I learned a lot form that perspective. I also missed the backstage antics with guests, Steve Bennett in particular. He's a riot.

Working the staff suite was cool. The work wasn't hard, and often I had to bug Moria or Louann for work. I did a lot of ice runs, stocked soda, and did a lot of cleaning when I could. Man, next year, I am going to try and sneak in a vacuum cleaner. The BEST part was the chats I had. Damn, there are some smart and wonderful people back there. I'd take them over Green Room guests any day. I got to shoot the shit with former Fantek/Katsu security, a Renn Fest worker, an EMT, lesbians getting married, play with a baby, and got to hang out a little with Morgan and Beth's kids who are totally awesome. [info]ninjacooter got to visit.

I took a lot of phone calls at the con. Some of you know why. In an operation I call, "Operation see more Roller Derby" (I just call ORD), it was going well. VERY well. I can't say more in public, sadly, but I told many of you singly what was going on.

Speaking of Roller Derby, I may volunteer for them, probably their sales table or as a bruiser (guard). More on this later.

I got tapped to be emcee at a different Con's cosplay. The only thing stopping me is transportation and room, so I am "in negotiations."

[info]joeanon and I are trying to start a new rumor: Pepsi is a new sponsor for erotic taxidermy. Motto: "Mountain Dew; Dead Animals."

I was also on call this con. I try VERY hard NOT to be on call at ANY con. It's not working out this year, as every con I am at I will be on call. Balticon, AMA, possibly Otakon... all weekends I am on call. Thankfully, work didn't page very much, and it turned out that the pages were because someone gave a customer admin access to a box they shouldn't have, but after reviewing this mistake, the person who did so was ordered to by a superior (head of sales), and what could they do? Luckily the only damage the customer did was reboot the box frequently (which is why I got paged each time), and accidentally delete his entire CVS repository (which I have just restored). [patronizing to a child voice] Some people are not given administrator access for a REASON.

I keep telling myself my pictures would come out better if I didn't use my iPhone for every one of them. But it's sooooo convenient because it's right there, and not added bulk like a camera. I did take some photos with my normal camera, but not as many as I should have. I did get some video, though. Some of Aural Vampire and some of the DJ Amiga Rave. I'll post those soon.

The only "bad" thing that happened to me was Saturday night, I lost a dental crown. I was chewing some Jujubees (yeah, not smart, I know), and the crown came right off. This was the worst part. But luck was with me, as I said, and it happened right in front of Anya, who is our family's best friend as well as our current dental hygienist. She told me what to do: save the crown, and show up to her office the second they open (7:15), and try and get an emergency appointment. I did just that, and they fit me in right away. The crown was undamaged, and the tooth was also fine. It turns out that the cement of this 5-year old crown had failed, and probably was failing for a while since some of the gum had grown back. The tooth was fine. In 15 minutes, the crown was back with new cement, and I was on my way. So... how bad could that be?

The rave was good, but next year I must remember NOT to have my staff lanyard on. It's hard to get into the rave when people ask you questions every few minutes, like, "Where do I volunteer?" or "Can I put this down and will you guard it?" or "We're out of water." or "My glowstick is stuck in someplace, guess where?" One person asked about my book, and wanted a rundown on why I wasn't in Opening Ceremonies. It didn't help I was wearing my KEI shirt, either. Next year, I'll get a regular lanyard, some glowsticks, tuck in my badge when I get through the door, and wear a shirt that suggests a form of anarchy might be preferable under the right impulsive conditions.

Convention memories: The con suite that rebelled [Feb. 10th, 2009|02:55 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

Disclave is a long dead convention, but when I was a kid, it had this kind of bipolar personality. During the day, it was regarded as a convention of boring old fuddie-duddies. But when the sun went down, the younger set woke up and started to horse around. I was part of that younger set, and while I never engaged in any of the antics, I did witness many of them first hand.

One that stuck in my mind over the last 16 years was Disclave in 1993 where the con suite rebelled against the staff.

Having been a loyal Disclave congoer in the 1980s, this abruptly stopped when I got married due to financial reasons (mainly we couldn't afford Balticon or Disclave, nor did we have enough time off from work). In the early 1990s, I attempted to restart my non-FanTek cons to coincide with the release of my first book. This didn't go as well as I would have hoped, but part of that was that I got a real job (heh) right after my book was released. In fact, while I was at Disclave 93, I got a call to leave for an interview.

To get a free badge and jump start my fan base, I worked the Green Room. I would seriously recommend doing this at any con after doing Reg table for a few years: many guests are simply fascinating and wonderful people. But the best part was seeing the unfolding of a convention so beset by internal politics, that one department actually rebelled and declared independence.

Anime USA - Never been [Oct. 13th, 2008|12:20 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

So, as I said, a few weeks ago, I was only vaguely aware Anime USA existed. I had heard of it, but not known more than it's a local anime con. Then so many people asked if I was going, I got invited several times, and had free room and board. So I went.

All in all, I give the con a C+, but the experience a B. I felt that I was meant to go because it just seemed so... obvious in a cosmic destiny sense. So I just kind of sat around and let things happen. If anything DID happen, it must have been subtle, and years later, I can say, "If I hadn't had gone to Anime USA in 2008... I never would have been a millionaire." I *really* tried to let things happen. I tried to keep myself out in the open, hung out with friends, and generally just "experienced" the con. And I had fun... but nothing wow-inspiring, "holy carp, my life has changed!"

The con according to me )

Old Prune Bran Alumni [info]badmagic has a post about How do normal people make friends? which has spurned some debate. I suggest you take a look. But then I asked, "How did I make friends?"

In clusters.

Balticon Wrapup [May. 27th, 2008|11:52 am]
[Tags|, , ]

SoooOOooo...

Another Balticon has come and gone. This is the first con in a while where I didn't have to work as much, and I wasn't with family. I had a good time mostly, but I missed my wife and son pretty bad at times. I am used to having someone to "report back to," kind of like a home base. So I drifted more.

I would like to point out an error I made, [info]takayla did NOT have a business thing she had to attend on Saturday like I told everyone. She just did not want to go. Having done Balticon night ops for years, she was just tired of the whole thing, and we go to cons for different reasons. But I got communication lines crossed due to a misreading of an IM conversation earlier in the year. It didn't help that we couldn't afford a hotel room, so she would have been miserable. I missed her anyway. So, sorry about that mistake.

Where was I? After being with [info]ironkite and [info]aurienne (thanks for the casserole and pizza, guys), I rode back with [info]saritata and her boyfriend Tim to the con, and got sucked into a Vogon poetry contest with Adrienne. I submitted 5 haikus, and two of them were top "winners," if you could call it that. Ha ha. Take that, Frank and Vinnie's Con suite! Afterwards, I went back to the hotel.

I didn't get to hang out with Peter S. Beagle because he was really busy, but I spent a lot of time talking to his agent Connor, which was very cool.

Monday dawned and made the first 4-day con I had been to since Gencon a few years ago. Usually, I never stay the Monday of Balticon (and when Disclave had that weekend, I rarely stayed after Sunday either). I spent most of Monday hanging out with friends. I sat at Nancy's button table, which was awesome, and got to speak with merchant pals. I got invited to several cons, most of which I declined due to logistic reasons (time off from work, on call schedules, being away from family, and so on). But I found out that I am not going to Gencon or Triadcon this year for the same reasons: each con got bought out by a specific vendor, and those vendors don't want competing systems sold at the cons. So MSD won't go, and thus, neither will I.

I might have a way to Otakon, depending on several issues. That's a new development.

Then I was a "non-judgemental judge" for the Towel Fashion contest, teaming up with Adrienne as we did in the days of yore. By the time 2pm rolled around, [info]tth and [info]aylinn were tired and wanted to go home when their shift at the game room ended. So we left and they graciously went out of their way to drop me off at Shady Grove Metro.

The train left very late, and by the time we got to DC, the trains were over-packed full of Memorial Day tourists and a plethora of workers who don't get holidays off because they work retail, hospital, or otherwise pretty brutal jobs. But since it was a holiday, Metro ran holiday hours, which meant one train every 10-20 minutes instead of 3-5 like they usually do during rush hour. The Blue Line went down at Arlington Cemetery, causing a ripple effect on the Orange line, and some 8-9 year old girl had to hold onto me because the sheer force of the people inside had forced her apart from her parents, and she was too short to reach any bars. She gave me some book recommendations I was looking for for Scarlet, so that worked out for me, but I felt bad that so many commuters completely disregarded her. One guy actually rested his backpack on her head until I told him to stop. Man, she's just a little girl, folks! Have you no sympathy?

When I got home, stayed with Ahfu for a little bit, who is doing mildly better. He's really crabby because of the pain and all. Then I had to unpack, spend time figuring out why the Internet went down over the weekend (the Verizon router was broken, luckily I had a spare Linksys), and try and sort out all the notes and contact info people gave me. I also have a large backlog of books to read. The cats and dogs were happy to see me, and Taboo slept by my head and purred for a little while. I fell into a deep sleep and dreamt some pretty bad dreams, though. I have had a feeling all day like, "A storm is brewing."

Back from Balticon [May. 26th, 2008|08:41 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

Much to report, but I am safe and at home. I had an Internet crisis I have no resolved by replacing Verizon's busted router with a spare I had.

I'd like to thank a lot of people. First, I'd like to thank [info]maugorn again for the lift, [info]tth and [info]aylinn for letting me crash, [info]ironkite and [info]aurinne for letting me visit, [info]saritata for being who she is best, and [info]daecabhir and his staff for running a good show. I'd like to thank Paul, Venora, Keith, [info]lohquesse, [info]moliarity, Steve, Tim, Kelsi, and Colette at Ops for letting me hang out (plus anyone else I forgot there who put up with my bad jokes).

I'd like to thank all my panelists, with special thanks to John Henry for his help, Connie Willis for being a good sport and being an intriguing person to chat with, Adrienne Reynolds for the Vogon Poetry and Towel Fashion Show, an agent/publisher named "Connor," for his discussion on humor, and some of the other authors and artists I chatted with at panels, room parties, dinners, brunches, and their merchant tables. I'd also like to thank Nancy Lebovitz for letting me hang out at her table.

[info]ravynmaniac, this is the calmest I have seen you in 3 years! I wonder why... ;-)

Sorry, CJ Henderson, I swear I'll hang out with you next. I know I keep saying that, but you're not only a fascinating fellow, but a great salesperson, and I didn't want to interrupt you while you were busy.

Thank you SUE for all your work. I wished I could work as hard as you.

I had a great time BECAUSE of you all. This is why I go to the conventions in the first place.

See you at Balticon 43!

AVOID THE MOP!

Trojan Horse - The Chaser [May. 25th, 2008|05:41 pm]

Being at the Hopkins-Walters house is like a relaxacon. Here's another video they shared with me. "Would anyone fall for a Trojan Horse today?" Well, not the Turks, at any rate, right?
