Well, it's Christmas Eve, and what am I doing up at 3am? Why getting ready for my shift tomorrow, of course! That's the first big change, getting used to a Friday thru Sunday, midnight to noon shift. At first, most people would go "Gaaaa! How horrid! You must quit right now, Punkie, no one should have to work that kind of shift!!!" But think about it for a second. Yeah, a 12-hour shift may seem like a lot, especially when coming down off an 8-hour one. But I only work 3 days a week. I get 4 off in a row, during the weekdays. "But your weekends...!" Yes, I do lose my weekends. But this shift is only temporary. Most people in my department get promoted within a year to a "normal" 9-5 M-F shift. And when I say most, I mean only two people didn't in the history of my department, and they they were fired (for other reasons, like not showing up to work, sleeping on the job, etc). But let me tell you, there is a lot more to this job than shift. First, I got out of our Member Services department into Technologies. That means standard industry pay (which was like a 25% raise), no more of these "sniper fire" layoffs to worry about, and the people in Technologies... are the kind of people that are, for lack of a better word, major cool.
We managed to find Kali (mom's cat) a home. My friend Nate's parents were looking for a cat just like her, and on Monday, Kali went to her new home. So now we "only" have four cats. But just to show how hopeless we are, we actually considered adopting a stray name "Clover" who had the cutest black face... but no, sadly, our common sense and my repeated self-abuse over the subject of cats won out
