A boring entry about house temperature

Well, I successfully reprogrammed the thermostat the other day, so now our house is nice and cold (this is not a bad thing). I feel bad because I could have done this in the past 4 years I have lived here, but it got pushed back to some self-looping /dev/null between the thoughts of "I really should do this" and "I don't know how to do this." The former owners got a super-duper computerized thermostat that tells time, and has 4 periods in which it can program through the day: "wake, leave, return, sleep." It's pretty cool because you can have a temp to use while you are there, but reduce the strain on the system when you are out. Like have the house at 60 while you sleep, warm it to 65 right before you wake up, reduce it back to 60 after you leave for work, and then 65 right before you return.

Luckily, we like the cold; Swedes with our Viking blood. And if it gets too cold, we can put on a sweater, a blanket, or even turn up the heat when we have guests.

A side effect of this is that the pets REALLY want to sleep with you. And takayla, being the warmer of the two of us, gets to deal with Widget, Latte, and Taboo all wanting to sleep around her and between her legs. I put in a low-setting heating pad for the pets, which they use, and then shed all over.

Our house is also poorly insulated. We're going to be working on this problem this winter, as out budget allows. We're getting insulating curtains to replace the cheap-ass blinds that have been falling apart. The previous owners bought them in bulk, "one size fits most" kinds of vinyl blinds; they look like the kind you'd get if "Dollar City" sold blinds. We also need proper curtains and window shades. The attic needs a LOT of work: half of the insulation is thin or in some places, not there at all (thanks Cox, for your incompetent techs). The roof has nothing, which is probably doubling our heating and cooling bills alone. I'd like to get rolls of foil-backed insulation up there, but our house is so wide that I probably won't be able to afford to put it up there all at once.
