Weather report from my Swedish family in north Norbotten

"The temperature plummeted to below -40C in Vajumat in Lappland overnight, a record for this winter. But with a vicious wind in the west and north of the country, the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute did not rule out a drop to -50C."

Holy crap, that's cold. That's -40 and -58 in Fahrenheit, respectively, not including the wind chill. Just to give you an idea of how cold that is, mercury has a freezing point of roughly -38, so your thermometer would stop working as the mercury went solid. At -50C, you could toss a pan of boiling water in the air, and it would land on the ground a frozen slush. Teeth crack in your mouth if you are not careful. Exposed skin dies within minutes. And people from Minnesota put on a sweater.
