Geek moment

There's some geeky thrill I get from looking at the inside of a DLT tape library. Like today, we got in our new (used) Overland LXB, dual drive and robotic arm. It's funny, with all the world of digital around us, we still rely on some mechanical Rube-Goldberg like things for offsite backup.

This huge box contains two normal tape drives, and a robotic arm that scans with its own laser scanner, pulls the tape out of the library with a little hook, moves them around with a worm gear, puts them in the drives, and pushes the drive buttons with a robotic finger. It works beautifully, but seems so... primitive in its nature.
