Three minor victories in the last 24 hours

First, my desktop computer at work died. Turned out to be a bad RAM chip. So for the last 24 hours, I had to run all these work applications on XP Pro at 256mb of RAM. Dog slow. Bootup to e-mail took 20 minutes, for example. One of the other admins is campaigning for us all to upgrade to 1gb each. His “pitch” in his presentation was amazing. He made this formula that stated 1gb could save 3 minutes of wait time a day, times 27 desktops, divided by average salary came out to a savings of $2100 a year after the cost of RAM. Our boss is now seriously considering it.

Second, I had a Linux laptop at home die a few months ago. I was sad; I really liked it. It was an Inspiron 5160, which was built in a very bad way: the fan to cool the chip is on the underside of the computer and blows out the back right next to the power cord, which has this huge bump for some reason. The fan gets covered when the laptop is placed on a flat surface, like a table (!?), and the fan microgrill clogs easily, and it has a 3.0ghz Intel chip and an NVIDIA graphics chip on the board, thus, the laptop always overheats. I got it for free because the company that bought them all had a bunch go bad, and just bought new ones. The laptop I got had non-working USB ports, a flaky NIC, and then finally the power connection went bad as the mother board warped. When the battery died, it could no longer power up. Well, after a bit of research, I found this laptop was still under warantee. So I called them on it. I was told this was a “known issue” with this model. Dell came out, replaced the motherboard, and then gave me a new power adapter. Since I had already backed up everything off the laptop and gave up on it, I reformatted it and installed the newest version of Kubuntu. Yay! I have a working Linux laptop again!

Thirdly, I also have been developing an AIM Bot. This is a program that sits on the AIM network, and when you IM it, it will respond with something. Right now, the AI is crude and insults you most of the time, which is kind of funny when you remember that one of the first BASIC programs anyone writes is something that will insult the person who types it in:

(11:47:17 AM) PunkWalrus: Hello
(11:47:17 AM) AlertBot: Hello. You are authorized to continue.
(11:47:28 AM) PunkWalrus: How are you?
(11:47:28 AM) AlertBot: You think that’s funny? I know what you’re really asking. You’re mean...
(11:47:34 AM) PunkWalrus: I am sorry
(11:47:34 AM) AlertBot: Just what did you mean by that?
(11:47:43 AM) PunkWalrus: Nothing.
(11:47:43 AM) AlertBot: Typos slide away from your eyes when you are not looking at them.
(11:48:02 AM) PunkWalrus: I thought they slid away from your eyes while you *are* looking at them.
(11:48:02 AM) AlertBot: Gah... I give up. Humans!
(11:48:09 AM) PunkWalrus: Is that an insult?
(11:48:09 AM) AlertBot: I think it all started when the glaciers and mammoths ruled the earth.
(11:48:15 AM) PunkWalrus: What did?
(11:48:15 AM) AlertBot: What are you really asking, here?
(11:48:28 AM) PunkWalrus: You tell me
(11:48:28 AM) AlertBot: That is quite interesting.
(11:48:38 AM) PunkWalrus: This is a worse demo than usual
(11:48:38 AM) AlertBot: That reminds me of my childhood...
(11:48:48 AM) PunkWalrus: uptime
(11:48:48 AM) AlertBot: local@localhosts’s uptime: 11:48:48 up 6 days, 15:48, 0 users, load average: 2.11, 2.09, 2.11
(11:48:55 AM) PunkWalrus: fortune
(11:48:55 AM) AlertBot: * gb notes that fdisk thinks his cdrom can store one terabyte
-- Seen on #Linux
(11:49:29 AM) PunkWalrus: That wasn’t a fortune, really
(11:49:29 AM) AlertBot: Come come, elucidate your thoughts.
(11:49:40 AM) PunkWalrus: You stole that from Eliza
(11:49:40 AM) AlertBot: Being a Geminii, I have learned to expect the unexpected.
(11:49:47 AM) PunkWalrus: You stole THAT quote from “Kentucky Fried Movie,” shithead...
(11:49:47 AM) AlertBot: What did you say, you ill-mannered tit-masher?? Worship your priest’s pet parrot and fuck off!
(11:49:53 AM) PunkWalrus: Goodbye
(11:49:53 AM) AlertBot: OH NOEZ!!1! HUEG SPIDARZ!!!
(11:49:56 AM) PunkWalrus: hangup
(11:49:56 AM) AlertBot: Goodbye...

I plan to have a much better AI soon. Possibly with a database back end, but I am working on a sorting algorithm so that the program is scalable.
